To protect themselves from the “miasma” – the foul smell believed to spread the plague – Italian and French physicians of the early 1600s wore the beaked mask, inside which aromatic herbs such as sage, rosemary, and lavender were placed. Even after the plague ended, the figure of the doctor dressed in this way remained an iconic element of our culture, especially in Venice: it was taken up during Carnival and in theatre, in both comedies and tragedies, and its name became semantically fused with many words of our Venetian language, even unexpected ones.
