Time can be observed through two perspectives, each corresponding to a different stage of concentration. The first is ‘the unrepeatable moment’, a unique opportunity described in the yojijukugo 一期一会, and represented by the camera. Here, concentration is directed toward the joy of the present.
The second is the analysis of change, described in the yojijukugo 龍頭蛇尾, which means ‘dragon’s head, serpent’s tail’ and invites one to pay attention to how a circumstance evolves beyond its initial premises. Here, concentration is directed toward the movement from the past to the present. With these two perspectives, the samurai can finally turn toward the future — which is now the new present — and seize the moment.
Seize the moment!
