In a tale by Lev Tolstoj, a little duckling tries to fish in a pond. Mistaking the reflection of the moon on the water for a fish, he dives toward it, hoping to catch it — and of course fails. The other ducklings nearby mock him, and in that moment the little one feels a pain he had never known before; rather than risk being ridiculed again, he chooses hunger instead. From that day on, he begins to see his peers as demons, but since they are just like him, this leads him to a moral doubt: “Could it be that I’m a demon too?”
Did your hands guide me here, or did I drag myself to this point in the dark?
